I haven’t made much progress with this note, because knowing the history of faith doesn’t help me as much as understanding saddhā in Buddhism.
It may be enough to say here that understanding the place of faith in modern science has helped me dispel the fear of credulity that sometimes held me back from believing something in the suttas - scientists rely on the accounts of other scientists all the time, and wouldn’t be able to do much at all if they didn’t, short of completing all the other experiments themselves.
